Late Bloomer Smokers

I cross posted this on another board, but I'm trying to get some help. I'm 22 and kind of experimented when I was younger, but didn't really pick up the habit until I was 20 (which I would consider a late bloomer in the sense that I never smoked with the smokers in high school...still in the closet about it to family and close friends).
Now, back in maybe January/February, I would get cravings as normal, and smoking relieved them (which is basically the reason people smoke). A few months ago when I was still in school, I had a problem with my thyroid, and my appetite was all out of whack. I smoked after that but not as much, and quit for a month in May. It just wasn't feeling as good. Cravings weren't hitting me hard, and it wasn't as fun because you don't get that rush you get from relieving a craving.
So I wound up quitting for a month or so, but when I started my new job, I started again. This time, it felt fantastic. Cravings would hit me hard and I could finally enjoy my little breaks again.
Pressure from coworkers and a (now ex) girlfriend got me to quit for a few months. Work got really stressful and I started up again. However, yet again, I'm feeling that same sensation I did in school. Cravings just don't hit me hard at all. I haven't smoked since 8pm last night (it is 2:18pm now), and in all honesty I don't have a huge urge to.
The sad thing is though that I WANT that urge. Why has it subsided? Of course the ideal thing would be to quit altogether but as of right now it's just not something I'm willing to do.
Could it have anything to do with my thyroid? For whatever reason, is my brain not receiving that urge to smoke or something? It's almost starting to worry me. What's the point of smoking if I don't feel like I'm getting much out of it?
