I believe chickens lay eggs when the conditions are right and don't lay when conditions aren't right. It's that simple. There is no thought process. To maintain right conditions we add light for them. Modern bred layers are bred to lay lots of eggs; not just a clutch or two and then go broody. But they will shut down if conditions aren't right. Most of my 11 hens are resting from their egg laying now. Molting and shorter cooler days are bringing this on. If I did't add light for them, they wouldn't lay eggs again till April. That's is almost 6 mo from now. With a few hrs of artificial light, there will be a trickle of eggs all winter and no hens egg laying capacities are being taxed. This is not forcing egg laying like the commercial companies do. It's nothing more than providing somewhat the right conditions for egg laying, even in a long cold MN winter.
We also raise our own grass fed natural beef and meat chickens fed an all natural ration; a LOT of our own vegatables. Don't care for modern food processing or feed lot (injected) beef or any other meats. It's deer hunting in MN now. We have been enjoying fresh venison. Killed here. Processed right here on ranch by my wife.
I agree with Rhayden in that everyone has a right to their own way of doing things unless it becomes unnatural and abusive. The Lord has a plan for us all to follow.
