Actually there is a science of sorts to helping because I do it with excellent success. First it has to be hatch day, the peep should have been externally pipped for at least 24 hours. A lot of stuff continues to happen and helping too soon can result in devastation.
When you've never done it before, waiting until most of the hatch is complete and the egg meets the above criteria then it is probably safe to help.
The old thing about weak chicks just isn't true, I've had them grow in to strong healthy birds even though they didn't hatch completely on their own. But you have to take it slow and be very patient.
