Hi Lisa,
I will share what I have learned about this subject. Mating doesn't have to take place for every egg. The hen has a storage area where the sperm can be stored. If you removed the rooster she could still lay fertile eggs for several weeks, some say 2 weeks and some say longer. So if everything is normal with your hens you should be able to get fertile eggs after seperating her from the rooster.Good luck!
