Grit is an absolute! With chicks and chickens. The grit is what allows them to digest their food. When chickens eat grit/stones these little rocks properly lodge in both sides of the gizzard. When grains and food pass through the gizzard the gizzards contracts and uses the grit to crush the food so the chicken can digest it. If there is no grit - no chicks or chickens!
My chicks pick the teeny grit from the dirt in the shovels of sod they scratch around on and I give them a handful every couple days on that sod and over their grain. Once they go outside they get plenty from the dirt they scratch in all day. If your chickens are inside then they will need grit in a little hopper or dish that they can eat regularly.
