Hi,
Greetings to anyone on the board reading this post. I have a flock of 9 birds, two RIR's and seven that are mixed RIR's and Black Australorp. I picked up the two RIR's this summer as 18 month old birds who reliably laid daily and they have since the day after they arrived here. The other birds were young pullets only one of which had laid at that point (mid-July). That bird, I presume, laid immediately the next day. Approximately a week later, another bird laid and in the following week another three began laying as well. In the past 3 weeks I've been getting 5-6 eggs per day typically and once this past week I saw 7 eggs in one day.
I understand that it takes 24-26 hours for a chicken to create an egg. I understand, in a rudimentary sense, the biology of that, makes sense to me, etc., etc. I was with my son last night just before dark when he checked and found the last egg of the day. I fed the birds this morning and saw that there were no eggs in the nesting boxes.
Here's my problem. This afternoon at 3 PM, I looked in the nesting box. I retrieved eleven (11) eggs! Eleven!! Two and a half hours later I retrieved yet another for an even dozen eggs in one day. From nine (9) hens.
Sorry for my long winded explanation but I wished to be plain. I do not haphazardly check eggs every few days or anything like that. Those nests were absolutely, POSITIVELY empty this morning. No iffy answers here, no...."well, maybe I was mistaken". Uh...no....I'm not, I'm absolutely, positively 100% certain of everything I've imparted here.
I'd really like anyone's sincere feedback on this. It isn't the end of the world, but how is this possible?
thank you very much for your time and considerate answers,
good luck
Sam
