Hi michelle, the nest should be at floor level so the chicks can leave and enter the nest. Having her in a kennel is best so other hens don`t bother her. The rooster may also harrass her when she is off the nest. Food and water doesn`t have to be within reach when sh`s on the nest as she must leave the nest for eliminations and a little stretch most every day and she will do this without help from anyone. When the chicks hatch, she will keep them warm, even if the weather is cold. Actually she will do all the work. Hope they both hatch for ya, ask any questions, anytime.....P
