If the bird is truly a broiler they are bred to grow rapidly for processing for food. Even as a pet they do not live long because of their breeding. Its awful that its this way but that's what man has done. If its a meat bird then making certain it does not get too heavy is the only thing I've read that helps keep them around a bit longer.
