My new bantam hen (around 5 months old) went broody (?) about a week ago so I stopped collecting her eggs. Unfortunately she has been suffering the wrath of my larger chickens who kick her off their favourite nesting box.
I supplied a second box which I now realise was a bad idea as my bantam hen jumped onto the larger eggs and may have left her eggs unattended for some time ( I work full time). Fortunately we live in the tropics (temperatures have been reaching 36 degrees Celsius) and when I made the discovery promptly put her back onto her eggs and removed the additional nesting box I had provided. Her eggs were not cold but not as warm as they have been (I've been keeping a close eye on the situation). I must admit to admiring her determination as we have to go and give her a drink and food of an afternoon as I don’t think she’s leaving the nest at all unless humbugged by my bigger hens.
I will keep an eye on her and the eggs for the next 2 weeks in the hope that all is well. Is it likely that the eggs she is sitting on are now useless?
