If over-used, the stuff can eat into healthy tissue, making it more susceptible to all sorts of horrors, like maggots, mold, scarring. I've heard of it leaving patches where feathers will not grow afterwards. If you've used it safely, go ahead and do so. What is the difficulty with keeping it dry? Does it flake or rub off too easily? The "drawing salve", by contrast, covers the wound, kind of like a grease coat would.
