We crush up the shells from eggs we use, and give the chooks some wild bird food and "scratch grains", as well as some dry corn (used for stock feed, from the feed store). The shells and the hulls, especially those on sunflower seed, are supposed to aid in eggshell formation. In several years I've found one "rubber" egg, though I suspect the birds ate one or two more before I got to the nests. I've read that sometimes stress will cause a hen to "let down" an egg before the shell forms fully. But it doesn't mean anything. Try more balanced feed, and limit the table scraps.
