Lew, it doesn't sound to me like Quincy has them in a pen. I've been told coyotes can jump a 4 foot fence, but 5 seems like kind of a stretch. I suspect they're climbing the fence. I once had a dog that couldn't jump a 3 foot fence, but he could climb out of a 6 foot pen when he really felt the urge, unless it was roofed. I also once had another dog climb about 9 feet up into a tree. Talk about weird! Quincy, if you don't see signs that they dug under, another possibility is that they're just running at and barreling under the fence, if it's not really tight. I've had dogs do that, too. (All these dog references are just about dogs I've owned, and that weren't after chickens.) I do think that electric low, and high, would discourage them. You might want to mount it out a bit further than is normal, just to hit them before they get to the fence. I would never guarantee it'll work, but I bet if there are easier pickings somewhere else nearby, they'll move on after getting jolted a time or two.
