We feed layer and scratch to our chickens and sometime throw in grass, bread and veggie cuttings (tops and bottom scraps). We have had 1 soft shelled egg in 3 years. My mother in law (from an old european village) says that if they get any salt it will make the eggs soft (i had accidentially threw some leftover salad that had salt in it when I got the 1 soft shelled egg).
