My hens use cat litter boxes, the ones intended for the cats to use, not the ones the litter comes in. Bigger hens don't seem to like the buckets, though; too crowded, or maybe not enough ventilation? There are advantages to these: easy to clean, easy to move in case of broodies you want to put somewhere away from layers, they don't encourage bugs, and I've not had rodents eat them. Whew!
