Hello all, I've got an injured chicken that I've given first aid and now am looking for any follow up, or at least some affirmation that i did something right.
I have two 4 month old chickens that I was attempting to introduce to my three 2nd year chickens. The young chickens were live in a rabbit cage that I had placed in the older chickens coop for a few weeks at least, so they could get used to each other without physical contact. Last night I followed advice I had read and moved the 2 younguns into the roost with the (sleeping) older ones, I hung around for another 5 minutes or so to make sure everyone stayed asleep, they did.
This morning I went up to check at 7 am, made the move at 10 pm. One of the two young chickens had been pecked, severely. Pretty much what you'd consider the 'scalp' of the chicken is totally raw, starting midway through the comb extending 2.5 inches down the neck. I'd say its 1.5 inches across at the widest. It looked pretty bad, but after a closer look the chicken still has both eyes and there doesn't appear to be any veins severed. But it is a large open wound on the back of its head.
So I drove to the local feed store, waited for it to open, and bought Blu-Kote aerosol spray. Before applying that I also sprayed the wound with a 50/50 mix of hydrogen peroxide & water followed by an iodine solution. I daubed the dirty looking spots with gauze and wiped its eyes and face, though I tried to keep the eyes clear anyways.
Sorry for the lengthyness, but thats the story. Has anyone used this Blu-Kote? Do you think I did ok? Comments or suggestions are what im looking for I suppose.
The injured chicken is in a separate pen by itself now and the uninjured one is also separate from the big ones and its injured counterpart.
Thanks!
