As a former Animal Control Officer for the State of Ct you are absolutely within your rights to shoot those dogs on their return. I have been called out on this type of thing before and you really should report this first thing Monday morning to Animal Control. We would go out, see the situation, where the chickens were, the property and so on, then get a description of the dogs (most animal control officers know most of the troublemaking dogs in their district) and then go and ticket each dog individually to the owner. Then a warning is issued to the owner about the dogs being picked up and removed if it happens again. That heavy fine and the threat of the dogs being removed usually takes care of it. And what a shame for your terrible loss of your chickens! You are surely due at the very least the cost of replacing and raising new chickens to that age.
