Cheryl I too was noticing problems with the eggs. The solution for me was to change the feed. We now let the hens balance their diet on their own. This realy does work I have 100 hens and I get great eggs all the time (not soft eggs in over a year)
First buy a poultry premix (its a protein concentrate in crumble form) Then buy a whole grain (I use whole wheat it has the best nutritional benifits) Also have oyister shell. Do not mix any of these together! Put them into separate feeders. At fist they will eat alot of the crumbles, but they will soon adjust to it. The idea is that they will ballance what they need in their diet on thier own. If they eat alot of grass and table scraps, they wont eat as much grain (their energy needs are already met) but they will still need calcium and protein. I hope I have not confused you. Layer mash is designed for hens in barns or cages, it does not work as well as it should if the hens have another energy source.
