Soft shell egg?

My wife just came in with an egg that has what I would describe as a "soft" shell. It also has what looks like maybe an umbilical cord type tissue on one end? I'm somewhat new to chickens but I've never seen this. Is this normal or what the heck do I have? Thanks.
