well Diana, from all I've read it only happens when chicks get dehydrated during shipping, or if their bedding is small wood chips or something they can swallow but not digest, so it passes through their system but gets swelled by water and can't be eliminated.
I've only had it happen to a couple of chicks, but softening their pasted up butts with warm water and soap on a rag until it softens and comes loose.
I have heard that hens with eggs stuck in them can be helped by taking a dropper or something and making them swallow vegetable oil, which lube their system.
at this point I'd say you have nothing to loose by giving this a try. it may be too late, and it didn't come to mind the first post.
