My youngest son was out riding his bike in the pasture this afternoon, when he saw a hawk dive-bombing my flock. Most of them had sheltered under the pear tree or the trailer. He came running in the house to tell me, and by the time I ran out, the hawk was gone into the woods lining the property. My neighbors flock was sounding the alarm and all huddled safely inside their coop, with the exception of a few roo's standing guard just outside the doors. Did a quick count of mine, and had everyone but Sweetie Pie - found her inside the coop?!?, dead apparently from either a broken neck or a heart attack. Her head was really floppy, but I still couldn't detect a break, so it could be either one. As with the other lost hens, there was no trauma or blood. All I can think was that she was too slow, and the hawk got to her where it couldn't get to the others. I've learned to deal with the occasional losses - guess they're just inevitable. But it looks like my dwindling flock is going to be coop-bound for a while until we deal with our predator problem. Again, I'm sorry for your loss as well.
