I just don't know Rachel, as they say, sometimes truth is stranger than fiction!
it being a soft-shell is an oddity in itself. ad in the strange internal stuff and who knows.
it is a shame you could not gently retrieve it and take some good pictures.
I helped my Ex Father in law pull a two headed calf!
it didn't live long, but it sure messed with my "senses". the extra head was only about 1/4 size and on a "Y" coming out of it's neck.
My Dad also had a hermaphrodite goat. he bought it for a Billy. it was very very strange acting. he told the truth (not the way he bought it) and got lucky and made a few bucks on him/her. it was a mental "whack-Job" and I wouldn't have taken it for free.
I don't know how long you have been here (easy chicken) but someone, posted pictures of more than one chick she got from a hatchery with four legs each.
We have way to much inbreeding going on in todays poultry industry. way too many breeders maintain a closed flock in order to produce show birds from a few and cull the defects that show. the problem with this is some defects show up in later generations.one of the best reasons to have a closed flock is if you have a "contract" to deliver hatching eggs for the hatcheries. new birds may bring in something and ruin your income.
anyone as old as My Grama Williams can tell you when you start seeing defects/problems, eat the rooster and get some new blood.(not fried/chicken and dumplings)
You very well may have a genetic problem just starting to show?
it could just be a "fluke", but keep your eyes open.
