Today I found, under the perch area in the chicken house for my little flock, the remains of a soft shelled egg. Now, that's happened before now and then, but this is soooo odd. It was not there last night, there was nothing there, so it was not set on, but the remains of this egg had what looked like 2 or 3 partially developed chicks in it. It could have been 1 and 2 parts of another. I tried to get pictures, but it was really hard because they were so small. I could make out an eye on the bigger one, it was about half an inch long or slightly less. How could that be? Even if I did miss it, the shell was soft, how could a hen set on that and incubate it? Could it have been retained inside the bird for just long enough for that to happen? I just don't get how this could be, but it is what I found. There were no other egg remains around, and it was not in an egg box, it was in the sleeping area. Any ideas?
