I was deeply saddened to learn of the cancellation of a ceremony designed simply to honor the memory of a Confederate sailor buried in Liverpool’s St. James Cemetery. The concept that such ill will is being perpetuated to such a great extent in both time and distance is extremely disheartening. I believe that our societies are strengthened by diversity. Some of those who claim to support diversity can be the first to call for the repression of people or views that do not meet with their approval, in the name of “political correctness.” This viewpoint is one of the great threats to the freedoms we still enjoy today. Please do not appease those who would to stifle the history of an entire people for fear of offending “certain members of the community." Please do not furnish a victory to those who believe in freedom of expression only for those with whom they agree. Please work to reschedule the original ceremony and hold it with both pride and solemnity. Those who sacrificed so much for their nation deserve no less. Sincerely, Donald Steven Smith Upon visiting the Project Web Site below, you will see that there are veterans buried on “Confederate Hill” from a number of countries, including England. We have honored, and will continue to honor them with new privately funded grave markers regardless of their country of origin. While we make no effort to offend anyone, we make no apologies for our actions to honor them or for their efforts to fight for hearth and home.
