I thought that visitors to St James's Cemetery would like to read of the latest news on the Glass Bridge. I have discovered a written reference to a Bridge in 1946, from The 'Architectural Review'. In 1948, Sir Giles Gilbert Scott wrote a letter to the 'Review' in which he discusses throwing a single span across the Cemetery. In the same 1948 issue of the 'Review' there are published several drawings by Gordon Cullen, the famous post-war draughtsman of 'Townscape' fame. His drawings show a single span concrete bridge with a very interesting approach from Hope Street.
I am having a meeting with Liverpool City Councillor Flo Clucas on the 2nd of April to discuss the plans for the Bridge. We have also been offered the independent advice of consultant engineers 'Mott Macdonald' from Mr Brian Duguid. They have extensive experience as checking engineers for a number of footbridges; in addition they are experienced in public consultation and focus exercises on Merseyside.
Together, we are now developing an strategic plan for gradually taking the project forward.
