With the exceptions of Monaco and Liechtenstein i think those are the two most stable monarchies in Europe.
The politicians in the sixties knew that Carl Gustaf would be king well into the twentyfirst century and they may have thought the monarchy would be obsolete by that time. Had the monarchy been without heirs in the 1970's the public might have demanded a new monarch instead of a president.
: I seem to recall reading in the annual
: yearbooks of the events of the year, that my

: This was of course after CG was born, but

: Had Carl Gustav been daughter number five i

: Another option would have been to allow
: Bertil and Lilian to marry. Had they married
: in the early 1950's they still might have
: had children of their own. In that scenario
: the succession would have gone to Bertil's

: him adopting an heir just like the

: In that scenario maybe one of the morganatic

: Had the succession been altered to include

: current Queen of Sweden might very well have
: been Birgitta.

: I am aware of Pr.Bertil's role as spare to
: throne at a time when all his brothers
: (apart from the Cr.Prince) had made unequal
: marriages and were banned from the throne
: line, and the Cr.Prince only had daughters.
: Precisely because the Crown-Prince, after 12
: years of marriage, had only produced
: daughters, was it ever foreseen a solution
: as the Danes took years later and abolish
: the salic law ?
: Had the Cr.Prince ever tried to revert the
: law and make his 1st born Pss Margaretha the
: heiress to the throne ?
: Are there notices of any demarches he might
: have made with his father and grand-father
: (the then king), government, parliament ?
: Any facts revealing Pr.Bertil's thoughts on
: such (eventual) project ?
: If at the time he was already dating Lilian,
: he might have to drop her off in case
: Carl-Gustav would have been born the 5th
: daughter... and be forced in a marriage with
: a proper princess.
