Merete had lost her mother very early and Ingrid took on the role as her extra mother, maybe because she knew from her own experience how it felt to lose a mother far too early. As a widow, Queen Ingrid usually celebrated New Year's Eve with Mr. and Mrs. Rostock-Jensen at their home.
Merete Rostock-Jensen was appointed lady-in-waiting in 1987 and was a big support for Queen Ingrid as she grew older and more frail. As Ingrid's life drew to a close, her loyal lady-in-waiting and friend didn't leave her out of sight. In fact she spent the nights in a bed next to the old Queen.
After Ingrid's death Merete Rostock-Jensen received the royal courtesy title Kammerdame, which is the female equivalent to Chamberlain.
