Richard may have exaggerated a bit, but he has repeated it in many interviews. He respected and understood Queen Ingrid's point of view because she belonged to a generation who had experienced the war. The two of them had a warm relationship, though. When King Frederik and Queen Ingrid suggested that Richard become a Danish prince before his wedding, it was (according to Richard) because they were worried about the public reaction to a German son-in-law.
