I agree with you a 100%.
It would be understandable when family and friends are concerned but not completely unknown persons passing it...
I guess it derives from the times that people were present too when royals were born...
But there is also a difference in national cultures too.
Lit de parade would be castrum doloris in Danish/Latin wouldn't it?
