I don´t think this has anything to do with "coolness".
MA (as well as Princesses Elizabeth and Margret Rose of Britain) performed to the pleasure of a close, inner circle and courtiers, not with a commercial background!
I don´t see this as a major faux pas, but, as I already put it, I´ve got some problems with a Queen dressed as a beggar´s woman with a torn, dirty face.
