: What keeps anyone from re-naming themselves
: John F. Kennedy, Elizabeth Windsor, or Jesus
: Christ?
That would at least not be allowed in Denmark.
: In countries that have no
: restrictions on titles being used as names,
: why aren't all children named Princess or
: Earl?
Probably because they have sensible parents
: People who
: are interested in a certain family will know
: which people are related to it and which
: ones just happen to have the same name.
Well, perhaps. But if there are suddenly 1000 people with the name von Holstein instead of 100, I think those 100 persons will feel that their name has devalued.
: Also, didn't this situation ever happen in
: Denmark?:
: 1) Hugo von Holstein marries Anna Jensen who
: has two young children.
: 2) Anna takes her husband's surname.
: 3) Anna's children's surnames are changed so
: everyone has the same name.
: 4) Those children grow up and pass the von
: Holstein name down to their descendants.
Probably yes. But Anna's children from a previous marriage will at least never belong to the nobility, so it's only the name that spreads and not any title. When I brought up the nobility issue, it was about titles and not names, so we are drifting away now
