What keeps anyone from re-naming themselves John F. Kennedy, Elizabeth Windsor, or Jesus Christ? In countries that have no restrictions on titles being used as names, why aren't all children named Princess or Earl? In reality, being stuck with a famous name but not the money and connections that go with it is just an annoyance. People who are interested in a certain family will know which people are related to it and which ones just happen to have the same name.
Also, didn't this situation ever happen in Denmark?:
1) Hugo von Holstein marries Anna Jensen who has two young children.
2) Anna takes her husband's surname.
3) Anna's children's surnames are changed so everyone has the same name.
4) Those children grow up and pass the von Holstein name down to their descendants.

:
: I have never heard of a situation where miss
: A marries mister X, becomes mrs X, than
: divorces mister X to remarry mister Y and
: miss A and mister Y are than known as mister
: and mrs X. I don't know if Danish law allows
: that
:
: Danish law allows that. The Danish nobility
: organization is fighting against it, exactly
: to prevent a scenario like this:
: 1) Hugo von Holstein marries Anna Jensen
: 2) Anna takes her husband's surname - but
: later divorces him
: 3) Anna von Holstein marries Peter Hansen,
: and he takes the name Peter von Holstein
: 4) Peter and Anna's children get the name
: von Holstein
: 5) Even worse: Peter's children from a
: previous marriage also get the surname von
: Holstein.
