Yes, he thought it would be a sign of respect to the Danish "tradition" that he converted. Besides he thought of it as a religious non issue in general: in his view there is only one God, be it Catholic, Protestant, Buddhist, Zen or whatever. Cf. his autobiograhpy Noblesse Oblige. He studied the Danish People's Church's traditions before he got wed. Like RC Marie Cavallier does at the moment according to what she said in Point de Vue.
Prince Henrik told, in a humoristic way, about a very religious RC sister (she was a nun, IIRC) of his with whom he discussed his conversion (of course she was not too enthusiastic about all this). (I cannot check things because I lent out the book.)
