I think he's trying to make peace with himself. Sure, it was a foolish and stupid thing to go and do and then be forced to lie about it. At the same time this did happen at probably the lowest point of his career and it certainly wasn't performance-enhancing in any way.
I think most people have likely either tried or been tempted to try a banned substance at some point in their lives, including no doubt professional players. I don't think it detracts from his achievements in tennis.
The only thing that I don't like is that the extract from the book doesn't mention the dangerous and negative sides of this drug. I hope the book mentions this as otherwise it could be seen as an encouragement to young people.
