Only AFTER the random mutation has occurred does selection by the environment occur. As to catastrophism, the good professor agreed with you, except that he described it as water building up behind a dam. Eventually, the ability of the human gene pool to continually stave off its inherited ailments and weaknesses, will momentarily collapse, and that moment of collapse will be the breaking of the dam.
