Of course, slavery as an issue is a far cry from abortion as an issue. I think there is a moderate middle ground on the abortion issue that those on the far sides in either direction are unwilling even to hear, much less actually consider as they have way too much emotionally invested in attaining their goal as a whole instead of a compromise. I personally oppose abortion past the 20th week except in cases of rape, incest, life of mother, or complete inviability of the fetus are involved. 20 weeks is approximately 5 months, about 4 or so months worth of time after discovery of pregnancy can be made. That is ample time to make the decision in well over 90% of the cases. And beyond that time excluding the exceptions, the fetus is more than viable enough to warrant having the decision changed to keeping the child or putting it up for adoption. There is no such middle ground in regards to slavery. Either you oppose it on principle or not.

All things being equal between a candidate supporting slavery and a candidate opposing slavery, I would choose the candidate opposing slavery.
