For example, whenever physics encounters a phenomenon which it cannot explain, it "invents" a particle or force to fill the gap. Thus we have "dark matter," and "dark energy," with no direct confirmation that either of these exists. So far, physics has not come up with a "conscion" particle (or force) to explain consciousness. Yet consciousness is the most profound phenomenon of the universe (or at least, of the scientist himself). Clearly then, there is some vital underlying physical principle which may perhaps be forever beyond physics. The late Bishop Fulton J Sheen enunciated in one of his books that, while reasoning can never lead us to God, it is only in the context of God that all else can be found to be reasonable. The longer I live, the more I begin to realize how profound that idea is.

Fair enough.
