Posted by Bob on 8/30/2007, 12:49 pm, in reply to "Re: Individualism" I have on many occasions remarked on the need for social cohesiveness, and the individual's responsibility to help meet the needs of society. But to that end, one must place strict limits on the extent to which society can lay claim on a man's freedoms. The libertarian view is that government must take the minimum amount that it can, while still fulfilling its Constitutional functions. In other words, government is entitled to all that it legitimately needs, and not one penny more. The liberal view is that the Constitution does not go far enough, that the government owes it to everyone to ensure that everyone's needs are met, even if that involves stealing from Peter to pay Paul. That is why socialists see a tax reduction as a give-away. They do not see taxation as a taking, and a tax reduction as taking less. They see you keeping your money as if you were the one taking it from the government. I would say that it leads to communism, except that ironically (and few Americans know this), communism's ultimate stated objective is that government should disappear for lack of need for it. In that regard, I don't think Hillary is anything like a communist.
