It does not mean, "can't mention it in the public sphere." It means, "free exercise." It means that, if you are offended, look the other way [to borrow a phrase from the left, which they never apply to themselves when they are the ones who are offended].

Nowhere in the Constitution is it written that religion has no place in the public sphere. What is written is that Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, [and here is the part that the left cannot abide] nor prohibiting the free exercise thereof.
