Posted by Bob on 8/7/2007, 6:02 am, in reply to "Re: Bad News From Iraq" The Democrat leadership has hung its hopes for electoral victory in November 2008 on the prospect of anti-war sentiment. Anti-war sentiment is unlikely to be a factor if we are perceived to be winning. I don't know of any leading Democrat candidate who is demanding MORE effort in the war, MORE troops in Iraq (although Hillary came close on this one), and MORE terrorists killed. Their mantra seems to be, the war is already lost, we are wasting money and lives, we can't win, we need to escape as quickly as possible. Once the Democrat leadership has rallied round THAT flag, the worst electoral result for them will come if the enemy ceases to be able to pull off major attacks. In its most absurd form, this fear of victory was expressed by Madeleine Albright, former Clinton Secretary of State, (we can trust North Korea), who suggested that Bush might actually have already captured bin Laden, and be holding him in secret, until just before the 2004 elections. While her statement was fodder for late night TV comedians, it revealed the deepest, darkest fear of Democrat politicos--- a grand victory for the US would make the Dems look as inept at war as Michael Dukakis did in his infamous photograph, which could have been captioned, "Hey everybody, look at me, I'm driving an army tank, so I must be a warrior after all, this proves it." Let's face it, the Democrat leadership no longer has the likes of FDR and Harry Truman at their helm. LBJ was their last pro-war leader, and he was inept. Democrats are not the "We will fight them on the beach, we will fight them in the streets, we will never surrender," sort, unless they are talking about fighting against conservatives or for abortion. The elction is coming, and the surest way to elect Democrats in November 2008 is for America to suffer military defeat before then. Otherwise, the Democrats will be in trouble.

Your points might have some merit in another context, but not in terms of the upcoming elections.
