Religion" You are griping about a qualified professional doing his job and duty to the field, which is weeding out candidates who are not ready for advanced studies for whatever reason. In this case, it happens to be that the students deny the foundational theory of the field. I am sure they had ample time to put forth their arguments during their entire education and make a case with this professor. The rest of this conversation has been absurd. They got cut because they deny the foundational theory of the field. This is tantamount to a physics student denying the basic theories of physics and still seeking approval to continue into the advanced studies of quantum mechanics. I would be appalled if a professor let such a student through to graduate school.

I do not believe that to be what is occuring at all in this instance. The students had ample time to review and consider the evidences for the foundational theory of his/her chosen field. Upon that consideration, the student then chose to reject that foundational theory, at which time, this particular professor found them unworthy of advanced studies in the field, a valid response by any measure.
