These students are not "challenging" a cornerstone in their field. They are outright denying it, despite the strong explanatory power and evidences for it. Challenging evolutionary theory for its flaws is one thing. Denying it is something altogether different. "Even a flawed challenge can lead to a "tweaking" of that cornerstone theory." But an outright denial of a cornerstone theory will not lead to tweaking the theory. It will lead toward subversion of it.

That is a weak response. The student has gotten a fair hearing, and by denying the foundational theory upon which the field rests, is rightfully denied support from his professor to practice advanced studies.
