It is indeed idiotic. A student who has consistently demonstrated competence over a four year period should be individually evaluated, not summarily dismissed without consideration, to post graduate work. If his presentation of his case proves to be unreasonable, then deny him on that basis, not on the fact that he challenges a "cornerstone" of his field. Even a flawed challenge can lead to a "tweaking" of that cornerstone theory. Otherwise, you create an environment wherein scientists might not dare to investigate a dramatic departure from accepted theory for fear of not receiving a fair hearing.
