Transmutation of elements may not even be physically possible, thus leaving creatures of that nature with no choice but to seek natural resources. "If we accept that as a working premise, then we are left with two likely solutions to the Fermi paradox. Either there are no ET techno civilizations, or else, they are secretively watching us." Even with that as a working premise, there are many other possibilities that you too quickly discount. I am afraid that dichotomous thinking on this particular issue is way too simplistic.
