Also possible is that with incorporating technology into the biological unit, a civilization could end up similar to the Borg of Star Trek, endlessly seeking more planets to colonize for their natural resources in order to sustain their technologically driven aims. Couple that with curiosity and a need to know, and the idea of assimilation to learn about and incorporate new cultures into the matrices of the network, and it is as real a possibility as the other outcome.
