Mcgreevy is an Irish name - ancestrally from
Counties Clare, Mayo, Antrim, Down, Roscommon-Leitrim...
Mac Giolla Riabhaigh - "son of the servant of 'Freckly/Brindle' [personal name indicating personal appearance]"
* Mag Riabhaigh [contraction]
* MacGreevy [usual anglicized form] MacGreevey [variant form]
* Greevy/Greevey [rare form]
* Greavey/Greavy [Very rare form]
* MacGreavy/MacGreavey [Very rare form]
* Magreevy/McGreavey/McGreavy/McGreevey/McGreevy [all variations]
Somewhere along the line, a family group migrated to Scotland -lots of Irish did so - where they were bards to various clans. On a "pay for your name site", McGreevy is said to be a sept in the Clan MacGillivray [part of Clan MacIntosh -> part of Clan Chattan Conference], but MacGillivray points it back to the Irish source of the name.
