My husband's grandfather's name (b. 1900) was Florence as was a good friend's grandfather's name(b. 1911). The nickname was "Flossy", much the same way that the nickname for the man's name Maurice was "Mossy". I'm familiar with the masculaine name Maurice but have found no other evidence that the use of Florence was a common Irish practice around the turn of the century and it seems to have dropped rapidly from use. I did come across the Irish name "Flaithri" pronounced "Florry" from the Gaelic flaith (prince) and ri (king) meaning "king of princes" and am wondering if this could be related. Thank you for any information.
