MOORE AND GEHRKE GRAB NSTC 05 WINS By: Kevin Ramsell Thursday, September 22, 2005 (Loves Park, IL) - Matt Moore and Eric Gehrke grabbed the first two championships at the 40th Annual National Short Track Championship presented by Chicago International Truck. The Super Cup and Hornets completed the first night of racing action. Moore made the trip from Tomah, WI to take home the 58-lap Humongous Hornet Swarm. Nick Lasher grabbed the early lead. The scariest wreck in the event happened on lap 15 when Rodney Quillman rolled his car over on the backstretch. While the car was on the roof, JD Jackson clipped Quillman and rolled his car over as well. Jackson was actually able to continue to race while Quillman was done for the evening. Moore grabbed the lead at the re-start. On lap 20, a five-car pile up on the backstretch caused another standing re-start. This time, Lasher took the lead back. Randy Reynolds made his way to the front, and on lap 29 he moved to the inside of Lasher to take over the lead. On lap 34, Moore got on the inside of Reynolds and to take back the top spot. The caution flew with four laps to go to make it an interesting finish. As the green flew, Moore took off with the lead. Lasher made an attempt to get on the inside of Moore, but at the checkers it was Moore with the win and Lasher second. Reynolds came home third. Mark Vicencio and Jarrod Sutherland rounded out the top five. Gehrke started third and quickly grabbed the lead in the 24-lap event for the Super Cup division. The best battle of the night was for second between Andy Forster, Karl Turner, Ken Jones, Jake Jesup, and Jeff Myers. The five cars put on a great battle for the position. At the checkers, it was Gehrke with a healthy victory. In the battle for second, it was Forster taking second with Jump in third. Turner and Jones rounded out the top five. The action continues on Friday with qualifying at 4:30 p.m. The racing action will commence at 7:07 p.m. with feature action in the American Short Trackers, Winged Women on Wheels, Midwest Modifieds, Grand Nationals, RoadRunners and Big 8 Series. The action will continue on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. It?s the 40th Annual National Short Track Championships presented by Chicago International Truck. Its going to be "One Great Racing Weekend!!!"
