TALLEY & GANTZ TAKE HOME CHAMPIONSHIPS By: Kevin Ramsell Saturday, September 17, 2005 - A capacity crowd was on hand for a "Night of Thrills" at the Rockford Speedway. While fans were treated to school bus races, monsters trucks, and many more wild events, they also witnessed champions be crowned in the Hornet and Figure 8 divisions. Steve Talley came into the Saturday night program with an 8-point lead over Mark Vicencio. Vicencio did what he had to do to take over the top spot by winning the 13-lap Hornet Swarm. But, Talley's fifth place finish gave him the championship by one point over Vicencio. Ben Montemayor came home second with Raymond Hardesty in third in the Hornet Swarm event. In the Figure 8 division, Pat Smith was hoping to catch Chris Gantz and take home the Figure 8 championship. Smith would capture another Figure 8 feature win but Gantz stayed pretty close to Smith to take home the 2005 Figure 8 Championship. Ben Larsen came home third in the feature event with Jerry Mesch and Robert Stoltz rounding out the top five. The Hornets will be in action this Thursday night as they will kick off the 40th Annual National Short Track Championships presented by Chicago International Truck. The Hornets will be competing in a 58-lap Hornet Swarm. NSTC 05 will take place from September 22-25th with 15 divisions competing for over 1,000 laps of feature racing action.
