BENNETT, CARLSON, FRISCH, SMITH, AND TALLEY WIN By: Kevin Ramsell Wednesday, August 17, 2005 (Loves Park, IL) - Doug Bennett, Dan Carlson, Shonna Frisch, Pat Smith and Steve Talley picked up feature wins on Full Throttle Wednesday at the Rockford Speedway. Bennett took home his third feature win in the NASCAR Grand National division. Bennett took the early lead in the 25-lap main event. Darrell Garman tucked into the second spot while point leader Nason was third. The best battle on the track was for fifth between Travis Eldridge, Matt Lundberg, and Dave Behnke. The three put on a great battle for most of the event. On the final lap, Nason got on the inside of Garman to challenge for second. At the line, it was Bennett with the win. Garman held off Nason for second. Brandon Eash came home fourth while Eldridge rounded out the top five. Nason holds a 17-point lead over Brock Behnke in the point standings. 33 points separate the top five in the Grand National division. Carlson nipped Dave Lignell to take home another feature win and extend his points lead. Corey Teran grabbed the lead as the green flag dropped on the 20-lap feature event. On lap 3, Lignell got on the inside of Teran for the top spot. Pat Smith started ninth and worked his way to second by lap 8. Four laps later, Smith caught Lignell to challenge for the top spot. Meanwhile, Carlson had to fight his way through traffic. As soon as he cleared the traffic, it didn't take long for him to catch up to Lignell and Smith. With three laps to go, all three were battling for the top spot. On the last lap, Carlson was able to get past Smith and then dove to the inside of Lignell going into turn one. Lignell and Carlson ran side-by-side all the way to the finish line where Carlson won it by a foot. Smith came home third. Carlson's victory allowed the fans in attendance to get half-price chicken the next day at any of the three Rockford are Popeye's restaurants. Tammy Hawkins picked up her first ever feature win in the first Winged Women on Wheels feature race. Hawkins grabbed the lead at the start and pulled away in the 15-lap event. Shonna Frisch started 8th and worked her way up to seventh by lap 8. But the story was Hawkins taking a comfortable lead to her first win. Frisch held on to second with Linnea Weeda coming home third. Vachenzia Jester and Amy Flippo rounded out the top five. Jennifer Erickson grabbed the lead in the second 15-lap WWOW feature. Erickson pulled out to a six-car length lead, but it didn't last for long Amy Flippo to catch up to Erickson. On lap 6, Flippo went on the inside of Erickson to take over the top spot. A lap later, Shonna Frisch went on the inside and passed Erickson for second. Flippo would go on to the win with Frisch second Frisch?s two-second place finishes gave her the overall win in the WWOW division. Steve Talley held off a hard charging Nick Lasher to take home the 13-lap Hornet Swarm. Talley grabbed the lead at the start. A big pile-up occurred in turn two on the opening lap with about 8 cars involved. At the re-start, Talley re-gained the lead. Lasher had to work his way through the field but came up short at the checkers. Pat Smith won the Figure 8 feature event. Smith, along with Jack Mayberry and Chris Gantz put on a great battle for the lead. Smith would continue hold on to the top spot. On the last lap, Mayberry and Gantz got together and both hit the outside wall. Mayberry got the worse of it. Smith would go on to the win. This Saturday night is Kid's Night at the Rockford Speedway. All kids 11 and under will be admitted for FREE. Plus, there will be Kid's Photo ID and Bike Races. The NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series action will begin at 7:07 p.m. The Super Cups will also be in action with their racing starting at 6:30 p.m. Rockford Speedway is the home of the 40th Annual National Short Track Championship presented by Chicago International Truck. 15 divisions will be challenging the high-banked quarter-mile oval on September 22-25, 2005. Highlight events include a 250-lap CRA Super Series feature and a 100-lap ASA Late Model Series main event. The 2005 competition booklet will be in the 2004 participants mailbox very soon, watch for it.
