Posted by Kankakee Speedway on 7/9/2005, 1:03 pm Ted "the Tornado" Loomis won his second straight Late Model feature at the Kankakee Valley Motor Speedway Friday night. It was his seventh of the season and it propels him ever closer to a second straight track championship. Loomis led from the first green flag, but faced a serious challenge from Wes Steidinger and Bob Pohlman. Pohlman was on the very upper edge of the track and his momentum carried him off of turn one and out of contention. Steidinger held on for second. John Provanzano didn't have to repeat last weekend's heroics and come from the back of the field. But finishing third kept his grip on the season point lead. His former challenger, Frank Heckenast Jr. was involved in a wreck as the feature was getting underway, and could not continue. Don Walden was fourth in his first visit here this summer, followed by another former track champ, Joe Harlen. RJ Gall continued his climb in the point standings with a sixth-place finish. In the Open-Wheel Modifieds, Jammie Wilson employed what he called "one of those last-lap things" and found himself in the feature winner's circle here for the first time this summer. Joel Funk led for all but the last lap and was able to hold off Wilson's low-side charge until the white flag waved. Wilson's bumper-to-bumper drafting turned into a nudge that knocked Funk a little off his favored line going into the turn one. This allowed Wilson to go low and gain the ground he needed to slide into the lead coming out of turn two. He pulled away enough to easily earn the checkered flag. Kyle Cooper was third, with AJ Dixon turning in a season-best fourth. In the Street Stock Division, Don McCarty made it back to victory lane, but not without a serious challenge from Joliet teenager Brett Peters. After earning his Illinois drivers license and finishing second to his step father a week ago, he looked ready to take the next step and win a feature, but his efforts to get by McCarty wound up creating one of those NASCAR shuffles and he wound up dropping back in the field. Randy Akers pulled into second and Peters held on for third, just ahead of point leader Jay Hamilton. The Indiana Modified Division made its second appearance at the track, with the same results for Toby Howard. He led wire to wire in the feature with Brad DeYoung second and Don Rance third. VIEWS FROM THE PITS: Track officials are hoping for a little rain before next week's big Modified show. The Osterhoff Fence Special will pay the winner $1,500, and a larger than average field of cars is expected. Summaries: Late Model Division Fast Time: Frank Heckenast 15.761 First Heat: 1.
